Speaker Bio

Liz and Doug Babbitt have five adorable grandchildren; the youngest is diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Liz holds an M.Ed. from Penn State University and is Ministry Relations Manager at Joni and Friends New England. Doug holds degrees in both Elementary Education and Communication Disorders from Penn State University, earning his certificate of clinical competence in communication disorders. As Speech Language pathologist, he works in a Massachusetts public school with intensive needs pre-school and language delayed children. They attend New Life Community Church in Georgetown, Massachusetts, where people and families with disabilities are enthusiastically embraced as indispensable members of the body of Christ.

Understanding Autism and Individuals with Sensory Processing Challenges
With 1 in 36 children now diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), more and more families are seeking ways to support children with autism and sensory processing challenges. This workshop will cover current Autism research and describe sensory processing differences in learning environments. You will receive practical ways and good resources to build the accommodations and supports needed for individuals with sensory needs. Time for ‘Q & A’ will be included.

 

Responding With Compassion: Navigating Challenging Behaviors
If you’re like most parents, you feel frustrated and defeated when confronted with your child’s challenging behaviors. The daily struggles can sap your energy and joy in parenting. You worry that you’re failing at raising your child and know this is impacting your entire family. This workshop is designed to help parents and caregivers who have a child with challenging behavior. We will provide insights into challenging behaviors such as, “All behavior is communication” and make suggestions about common reasons behind emotional and behavioral problems. Practical approaches and successful strategies for children impacted by disability will be provided. Time for ‘Q & A’ will be included.
